Google launches Gemini 3.8 Flash, its third Flash update in six weeks
Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash on September 2, calling it its most intelligent workhorse model yet, with gains over Gemini 3.7 Flash in software engineering, agentic tasks, and multi-step reasoning. It processes text, images, audio, and video, and is priced at an introductory $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through the end of 2026. Alongside it, Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, a restricted variant built specifically to find software vulnerabilities and write patches for them on its own.
What stands out here isn't any single capability — it's the pace. This is Google's third Flash-tier update in six weeks, arriving just three weeks after Gemini 3.7 Flash. That's a noticeably faster cadence than the industry's usual months-between-releases rhythm, and it's already live across the Gemini app, AI Mode, Google Sheets, Google Antigravity, AI Studio, and the Gemini API — not a staged rollout. The Cyber variant is being distributed even more selectively, through a new 'Fairwind Program' that prioritizes access for governments and critical-infrastructure operators.
If you use Gemini day to day, the practical upshot is that the 'default' model under the hood keeps shifting faster than most people are tracking — worth knowing if you've ever compared Gemini's output to a review or benchmark that's more than a few weeks old, since it may already be testing a materially different model.
